For as long as he can remember, James Brayton has lived by the rhythm of the ocean.

His earliest memories are of being three years old, standing on the deck of a drift boat beside his father, wide-eyed as the lines went tight and the sea gave up its treasures. Fishing wasn't just a pastime for James—it was the world he grew up in.

By the time he was twelve, his curiosity had turned into something more. One day, a captain handed him the wheel of a 65-foot boat. With the captain watching, James guided the vessel and even learned to dock it. That moment lit a fire in him—he knew then that his future belonged at the helm.

From there, he threw himself into every opportunity to learn. He worked as a mate, eager to soak up knowledge about bottom fishing, live baiting, kite fishing, shark fishing, and the countless details that make a boat run smoothly. By sixteen, James was already sportfishing full-time, learning not only how to catch fish but how to respect the sea that sustained him.

Over the years, his journeys have carried him all along Florida's coasts, from Port St. Lucie and Key West to Clearwater. He's fished the waters of the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, the Dry Tortugas, and Pulley Ridge-chasing marlin, sailfish, mahi-mahi, wahoo, grouper, and snapper. Each place added another chapter to his story, another lesson from the ocean.

When he earned his captain's license at twenty-one, it wasn't just a certification-it was the fulfillment of a dream that began nearly a decade earlier, when a twelve-year-old boy first took the wheel of a ship.

Today, Captain James Brayton is still guided by that same passion. For him, the sea isn't just where he works—it's where he feels most alive, and it's where he loves to share his knowledge, his stories, and his lifelong love of fishing with anyone who steps aboard.
